What’s Your Pivot Plan?

The winter season is a time of introspection, nesting and noticing a call for more quiet in our lives. We take cues from our beloved animals that hibernate and mother nature that ushers in seasonal changes to mirror our need for self reflection, deep rest and rejuvenation. The secular calendar reminds us to craft resolutions and the Solstice(Latin word for ‘stop’)encourages us to stand still to take stock. Once we’ve embraced these seasonal trends, how do we then forge on for renewed growth in the new year?

Here are three ways to craft a meaningful Pivot plan in 2017:

1. Lifeleaders that “play through the years” recognize that emotional agility is a key component to their successful lives. Much has been written lately on the importance of grit ( Angela Duckworth, PhD) and adaptability (Susan David PhD) as life skills to help us embrace disruptions in life. The good news is the ability to develop a meaningful “pivot plan” requires small, consistent changes that support our values to produce powerful results. The key, according to the research, is to prioritize self acceptance and to keep an open mind about our need for change in accordance with our inner wisdom and gut knowing. Small, conscious changes in alignment with the essence of who we are trumps big, dramatic shifts to impress others everytime. If your life is being directed by someone else’s expectations or another driving force that’s crippling your wellness and performance, it may be time to soul search during this Solstice season.

2. Lifeleaders embrace courage over comfort when it comes to crafting stretch goals in the new year. Moving forward to bring your best self forward produces its own rewards. If you’re considering a new career, starting a business or growing a family, ask others that have been there for wisdom, guidance and go to sources to empower your plan. Chances are there are blind spots you haven’t considered or untapped resources available to you that you didn’t even know existed before having these conversations. Going for what we’re passionate about even when we’re up against established interests or staggering odds can yield the sweetest returns on our efforts and enthusiasm. Never say never without doing the research first!

3. Lifeleaders know that the happiest people in the world are the ones that embrace a challenge with conviction for the benefit of the cause. They know shortcuts are few and that real results take time. They prepare their pivot plan with the understanding that the real joy of achievement is often in the struggle, not the prize. Learning to live for something outside themselves is the fuel that keeps their fire burning through all the seasons of their lives. Happy New Year!

We recently returned from a nine day tour of the Pacific Coast Highway in scenic California. Here’s what we were reminded of as a result of our surfin safari:

1. We’re all connected. We started our trip with a business conference in sippin Sonoma wine country. I keynoted at a senior insurance leader luncheon for the International Association of Claims Professionals. The topic was leadership resilience and the conversation with colleagues was connecting and encouraging for many. When we engage fully, we’re reminded of our collective efforts to insure, restore and endure as we share and craft meaningful solutions to life’s challenges. As Liane Cordes once shared, “Continuous effort…not strength or intellect is the key to unlocking our full human potential.” It’s great to be smart, but the long term imperative is to be effective, connecting and resilient.

2. There is an opportunity to create value everywhere. Social psychology is the scientific study on how we think about, influence and relate to one another. Long after the networking was done at this business conference, we continued to create meaningful connections with old friends from prior lives to new friends at trendy coffee shops. Exercising interest in others and being skilled at eliciting thoughtful responses always pays dividends on and off the job.

3. We are at our best when we have the courage to seek out new experiences or stretch assignments. Whether we ‘re finally having courageous conversations or losing ourselves to a passionate cause, we’re reminded that life doesn’t come with a money back guarantee. Going after what we want or feel compelled to share, especially if we’re up against established interests, requires our best energies without any certainly that we’ll be bridging any gaps. But it appears that the happiest people in the world are the ones that embrace the challenge for the benefit of the cause with courage and conviction. They learn so much by living for something outside themselves that the joy is in the struggle, not in the coveted prize.

Elevating Your Engagement

The American Society of Interior Designers believes that outstanding design can transform lives. Engaging well can have similar results if we remain committed to forging meaningful relationships. ASID’s recent state conference at the Molly Pitcher Inn in historic Red Bank, NJ gave members an opportunity to learn new skills and revisit teflon tips on how to continue to provide value for design clients while prioritizing self care.

So, if we agree as industry professionals that the ultimate deliverable is to help transform our client’s lives through design and authentic engagement, how can we stay on point post conference? Here are three tips to help you stay resilient in sharing your time and talent:

1. Stay current. The good news is data is a click away but are we stuck in myopic silos? It’s not enough to be a design expert if we’re trying to attract millennial talent to grow our business. Learn how they think, what they prioritize and how they could be a distinctly skilled advantage in your growth plans. Develop relationships that prioritize curiosity in lieu of judgement for productive success.

2. Manage your expectations. As Beth Comstock, vice chair at GE shares, we’re all spending our days managing tension. Practice patience. Develop a stress reduction plan that works for you. Research shows that the greatest leaders allow compassion to drive their teams, alongside focus and decisive action.

3. Be humble. Inc. magazine recently reported that 20% of CEO’s are psychopaths. Are you prioritizing skills and talent at the expense of character, empathy and team building success? The highest performing teams feel psychologically safe and free to create according to a compelling study recently conducted at Google. Learning in Louisville

Mixing business and pleasure was the perfect cocktail for a recent keynote in the bluegrass state of Kentucky. I was invited to speak on leadership resilience for an annual insurance industry conference where limestone filtered water had been sourcing worldclass bourbon since the late 18th century.

There was bourbon in the beer, the burgers and the barrels that lined every hotel lobby. Bourbon was everywhere but business was the theme of the day. We were excited to land in Louisville since this history rich city had recently been named a top ten city travel destination by CNN. Over 400 attendees converged to celebrate strong industry growth. According to the 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, insurance staffing is expected to exceed 2.43 million employees by 2020. The insurance industry may not be a media darling, but it always provides stable benefits, work/life balance and a rich variety of cross functional work opportunities for careerists. Think cyberliability concerns and superstorm realities. The demand for top talent will remain strong as the industry provides diverse leadership job opportunities.

What we learned in Louisville, however, was actually a timeless recommitment to the importance of old fashioned, refined relationship building skills. Here are three tips worth reviewing:

1. Do your "reach out" connecting before you arrive at your destination. Sounds obvious but it takes time and effort to pick up the phone or send a social media message. Turns out a colleague, who ran the HR function for one of the world's largest law firms, had just finished relocating their client services headquarters to Kentucky. She immediately connected me with influencers in commerce and business development in Kentucky. I, in turn, invited them to our conference as our guest for networking. Win-Win. Staying in touch and and helping others achieve success is the priority...and the old fashioned way still works. Priceless.

2. Southern hospitality is alive and well. I called a PR colleague and long time insurance client that had worked on the Wild Turkey bourbon brand campaign before I left for the conference. Turns out her colleague insisted on warmly welcoming us at our hotel bar(with bourbon, of course!) and that led to an invitation to a private tour of an authentic Kentucky horse farm and more business connections thereafter. If you're not into horses, go for the 50 different bourbon varieties tour. Check out whether you're a whisky wannabe or seasoned spirits sipper. Bottomline: Be a great guest or a gracious host. It pays big dividends in business and life.

3. People really do want to help you achieve your goals. You just have to get clear on where you're headed and have the courage to ask for assistance. This particular conference keynote was the culmination of timing, tenacity and networking with the right talent at the right time to achieve the goal. So where are you reaching out and up these days? Are you ready resilient

June 1 through Nov 30 is official hurricane season. No one is likely to forget the unprecedented and widespread damage that Hurricane Sandy brought to us on Oct 25 2012. Many of us, however, would be better protected if we had a deeper working knowledge of what "is" and "is not" covered in a standard flood insurance policy. This article will outline a few of the key provisions that will help you manage your expectations and dial up a risk management program appropriate for you or your business.

Everyone is at risk for a flood loss. Over 25% of annual flooding occurs outside an identified high hazard flood zone. Since a "flood" is defined as "runoff of surface water from any source", we're all suseptible to flooding since it rains everywhere and water will invariably run downhill. Typical examples of flooding include an overflow of a body of water(eg. stream, river or ocean) or a flashflood or rain downpour. Talk to your local construction/code enforcement town officials to determine if your location has been "remapped" for rate and elevation evaluation. You need a flood policy, regardless.

Here's a short list of what's never covered in a flood policy...even if you've purchased a policy with full limits for both structure and contents. Consult with your independent agent for a longer list:

1. Personal property not inside the fully enclosed insured building. Lesson: Move your property IN and UP. Think about all the potential contents around the periphery of your building that needs to be inside before the flood occurs.

2. Land, lawns, trees, shrubs, plants, growing crops or animals. Lesson: Never leave your best friend behind and appreciate your landscaper...but dont expect to recreate that beauty through your flood insurance policy provisions..

3. Walks, walkways, decks, driveways, patios. Lesson: Invest in improvements at your expense. No coverage on a flood policy for these items.

4. Fences, retaining walls, bulkheads, wharves, piers, bridges, docks, aircraft and watercraft. Lesson: Plan your commute accordingly on a stormy day!

5. Underground structures and equipment including wells, septic tanks and systems. Lesson: Coverage may stink if you're not prepared!

Quick Tips from Keynoting in Carolina

I had the distinct pleasure of visiting beautiful South Carolina recently to present on leadership resilience as a motivational keynoter for the Insurance Auditors Association of the Southeast. Go Greenville! and thanks Charleston for the initial send off. We were pleased to meet lovely lifeleaders in the spirit of southern charm and industry intelligence from one end of the state to the other.

In a brief conversation post conference with the event planners, I offered to pen a follow up article for their association e-newsletter. According to leadership at IAASE, membership welcomed suggestions on how to dial up their post conference connecting upon return to the office. Here were my three suggestions:

1. Share a valuable piece of learning from the conference with an office colleague, friendly competitor or industry contact. Showcase your generosity and enthusiasm for up to date learning. Sure, industry insiders that get excited about new audit classification codes or risk management industry trends are a special bunch, but by doing so, you model initiative and committment to professional development for all. How many of you know folks that attend conferences for continuing education requirements but never really put the new learning into action? Differentiate yourself.

2. Follow up with conference attendees on LinkedIn and preferred social media channels. When you invite a colleague to connect on LinkedIn, make it personal. Instead of the ordinary "I'd like to add you to my network" request, spice up your communication with a shared conference connection. For example , "Great to learn we're both Clemson fans between IAASE sessions" or "Thanks for sharing industry laughs at lunch last week" make the invitation personally memorable. If you didn't meet everyone you wanted to at the conference, reach out anyway with "Missed connecting in person at IAASE last week, but happy to be a networking resource for you in forward". Your colleague will likely appreciate your generosity, timeliness and initiative in connecting.

3. Volunteer your time to support your industry association. We're all trying to "keep the pace" today by doing work that truly matters. Investing in the programming caliber of an organization that supports your professional development should be a priority. Donate a few hours a month, be on an advisory committee or offer to "tele-meet and greet" new members to keep organization growth going. Your association board of directors will appreciate your creativity and willingness to share your precious time and talent. Maybe they'll put you in charge of Twitter or Snapchat to get you started in a brief and bold way for colleagues that like to get right to the point. Ask any insurance auditor from the Southeast that might connect with you on point!
